CHAPTER TWENTY

Finwell Bay: May 25, 2352

Otto spent the morning measuring the cottage. The place echoed strangely—not just the sounds of his footsteps in the empty rooms, but in his head. He drew the floor plan on his peeda with rough dimensions before hiking back over the headland to the company stores warehouse. Abby had given him an unlimited budget but only so much would fit. He picked out a couple of beds, basic kitchen appliances, and furniture. He chose a relatively small but sturdy kitchen table and matching chairs. The place was too small for a separate living room so he didn’t need a couch. He’d need a workbench and a stove for the shop. That would have to wait until he had the place livable.

“That all?” the attendant asked.

Otto went through his list and nodded. “Am I overlooking something?”

She shrugged. “Most people pick up an easy chair or two. Some kind of entertainment unit.”

“It’s a pretty small place.”

She nodded. “Some advice?”

“Sure.”

She pointed to his floor plan. “Kitchen here. Table here. Galley style. Push the table against this wall. Leaves most of the floor free unless you throw a dinner party.” She grinned. “I got a nice sectional that would go in that corner. Put a desk here with a screen on it and you can connect to the company net. Useful for weather if nothing else.”

Otto recognized the layout as similar to his mother’s workstation. He’d not had much use for the screen after Sarah left, but had to admit the suggestion made a great deal of sense. He’d need that unit to order from the chandlery. How had he not thought of it? “Yes,” he said. “Thank you. I was so focused on getting a bed to sleep in and enough kitchen to make breakfast, I hadn’t really thought beyond it.”

She laughed. “If there’s something that doesn’t work out, you can always return it for something else. No need to get it all today.”

“It’s a lot of work for you. I’d like to get it right the first time.”

“Not to worry. Not much going on right now. Middle of the season. Not too many people moving in or out.”

“What did my predecessor have out there?”

She rolled her eyes. “A huge bed. Table so big it only went through the door in pieces. Came out the same way. We made trips out there at least once a month.”

“I’ll try to keep my demands to a minimum.”

“Mr. Krugg, you’d have to work a lot harder just to come up to the standard employee’s demands. Half of them don’t even come in with a floor plan, let alone an idea of what they want.”

“Good to know,” he said. “You don’t have to float their furniture around the point in a boat, do you?”

She laughed. “No. That’s true. We don’t.” She looked at her tablet. “So? Anything else you can think of?”

He shook his head. “That’ll do, I think.”

“We’ll have this stuff around the point this afternoon. Tide’s coming in and we’ll want to use that to get as close as we can.
